I need to record this down before I give it away. The first time I read it, was astonished by it. I found it extremely inspiring. May this piece of words reminds me always to keep the motivation, never to be eaten up by stress, laziness, temptation or whatever it is, and always to hold on tight to my dream.
When I was growing up, a Chicago television station ran old movies on Saturday mornings. My gran, Murn, and I tried not to miss them. Murn's favourite was Shirley Temple's Wee Willie Winkie. I think because it had a Scotsman in it. My favorites were always the movies about the backstage lives of entertainers, like Gene Kelly in Singin' in the Rain, Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers in Swing Time, and Barbara Streisand in Funny Girl. With so much happening since the last concert tour, I feel as if I've been starring in my own backstage movie. Call it "Swing Funny." Hmm Maybe not. "The JB Story?" Boring. "Wee" - don't even go there.
This backstage movie since my last concert tour must include a clip from the third series of Torchwood, a scene from Doctor Who where I help the Doctor save the world...again, and another where I bid farewell to the Doctor... again. Perhaps there'd be material from playing Robin Hood in panto, flashbacks to the BBC documentary, The Making of Me, excerpt from my judging on I'd Do Anything, but the finale of this flick would have to be hosting my newest entertainment adventure for the BBC, Tonight's the Night. Finally, I'd include a musical number or two from my guest performances on Strictly Come Dancing, but the soundtrack to this backstage bio has to be Music, Music, Music.
Now What to call it?
How about "I Am What I Am."
I am often asked about my seemingly 'boundless energy', about how I manage to keep such a busy schedule, still meet high standards for my work, and all wihout losing my sanity or my hair. Scott and my family may have a thing or two to say about my sanity (keep it to yourselves), but for the most part I believe my energy and my drive vome from my fundamental philosophy about life.
I am happiest when I'm performing. It doesn't matter if the audience is large, small or just Scott.
I am convinced that our better natures come through when we love deeply, laugh often and live large.
I am able to laugh at myself.
I am idealistic and optimistic. I believe in having dreams, in following those dremas whenever you can, and, when you can't, hold on to them even tighter because you never know what opportunities are round the next corner.
I am a man who cannot sit still and I must always control the remote.
I am convinced that bad things will happen if I cut my toenails on a Wednesday, set shoes on a table, open an umbrella inside, spill salt, pick up a dropped globe or mention the Scottish play in a theatre.
I am a man of action and a man of my word. If I afree to do something, it will get done.
I am a technology lover. I love gadgets, gizmos, thingamy-jigs of all kinds. I could not live without my blackberry, my computer, my TV or DVD.
I am convinced that your reach should exceed your grasp; otherwixe, you'd never strtch for anything, but I also think there are times when you should grab what you can.
I am not above a little gloating when I'm right. It can be very therapeutic.
I am an animal lover. I agreed to host Animals At Work because it meant I could work with and learn more about animals of all varieties, and although the python slithering up my thigh and eventually wrapping itself around my waist was a bit terrifying, it was worth it for the opportunity to cavort with a tiger cub and contemplate life among llamas.
I am still on plan A.
My carrer conselor in high school said to me the entertainment world is a tough world in which to make a career. Have a plan B. She persisted that I had to have something I could fall back on. Finally, I told her I'd fall back on my ass if I had to, and then I'd pick myself up and move on. In my career choices and my personal ones, I've done my best to be true to myself, my family, my friends, and I hope, to you my audience and my fans.
This is who I am.
